... Patrick and Nora O'Donnell were married in the former St Mary's Church in Derrybeg on February 9, 1942 and they have just celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary. Patrick, better known as Patrick Pha'd Phat, and Nora, a member of the Doogan family from Glentornan in Dunlewy, were married by Canon McGroarty of Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore) and spent their honeymoon visiting a number of towns in Northern Ireland.
[This is my cousin Fr. Michael Hartley, who is a Parish Priest in England. He tells me that he has recently been appointed as Dean with pastoral responsibility for the priests of about 9 or 10 other Parishes. Maybe we have the makings of the first McGroarty Pope ?? My mother was the "Aunt Mary" that he speaks of. - JG]
... I am the son of Margaret (McGroarty) and Michael Hartley. My mother was one of three sisters born in Belfast. She has one brother (my uncle) Bernard who has now returned to live in Cork. They left Belfast during the early troubles. My Aunt Elizabeth married a Mr. McAleese and still lives in Belfast. My Aunt Mary married a Mr. Goodfellow. She died some 5 years ago but had lived in Portstewart. Her family is scattered around Northern Ireland. Margaret (McGroarty) Hartley has three daughters and one son. I live in Birkenhead, while the three daughters live in Warrington, Nottingham and Norfolk. My mother is very interested in her family history but we have very little to go on. She claims she had an uncle who was a priest in Donegal and her father was from that area. He had to travel out of Belfast to find work and ended up in Barrow and Birkenhead. He would have worked in the shipyards here. He died when my mother was 19 and would have been surprised to find that his grandson would one day be the Parish priest of the parish in which he probably worshipped!

We, the Christian family of Saint Pius V Parish, are gifted by God with the vision of Saint Dominic. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and truth we actively minister to the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of the members of the Body of Christ. Through a welcoming Eucharistic community, we commit to praise, bless, preach and to live the love of Jesus through word and deed.
The Dominican Mission at St. Pius
From its beginning in 1918, in Harkins Hall at Providence College, the church of St. Pius V, has been staffed by Priests, Brothers and Sisters of the Order of Preachers. The Order was founded in the 13th century by St. Dominic to meet the need of the church for trained and effective preachers so that people might hear and experience the Good News of Jesus.
Members of the Dominican family continue to meet the needs of the St. Pius V community. Whether it be in the sacramental and liturgical aspects of the Parish, its educational involvement or its outreach to those in need, the Parish of St. Pius V and the Dominicans have but one aim: to welcome you with the hope that our church community will prove to be a place where Jesus will be made real fo you.

HISTORY OF ST. MARTHA'S CHURCH, diocese of Scranton, Pa
The Reverend Hugh H. McGroarty was appointed as the first Pastor of St. Martha parish, arriving here on September 14, 1966 and celebrated an evening Mass of thanksgiving. This parish, which for so long had been a Mission of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, received the felicitations of both Reverend Frank Barlik Pastor, and parishioners of that church. Father McGroarty eagerly accepted his assignment, which also presented a challenge in that the parish possessed a beautiful church, but was without a rectory .He immediately rented a home in Harveyville which served as his residence for a very short time. The distance from his residence to the church was three miles. He felt that he should reside nearer to the church and purchased a mobile home, which was placed on church property, and which served as the first real rectory. Since this was to be a temporary rectory, he sought and obtained permission of His Excellency, Bishop McCormick to build a permanent rectory. Even though a debt of $40,000.00 on the church remained at the inception of his pastorate, the rectory was built and paid for with the help of God's grace, and the volunteered manual labor of parishioners, friends, and Father himself.
During the time of Father McGroarty's pastorate of three years duration, the parish continued to gain new members until towards the end of 1969, St. Martha Parish numbered approximately 100 families. A new cemetery was established adjoining the church.
On September 3,1969, Reverend Victor C. Zawadzki, in addition to his duties as Procurator of Bishop O'Reilly High School, Kingston, was appointed to his first pastorate by His Excellency, Bishop McCormick, to succeed Father McGroarty.
