Hi, great site! I am looking for information on my GG grandmother Bridget (Bridie) McGroarty born in Ireland (I think around early to mid 1850's) and married James Coyle. To the best of my knowledge they had one son (also James)before James 1 died. Bridget remarried someone by the name "Scott" and had another child "Minnie". Bridget died soon after (possibly in childbirth) and her husband died not long after. Minnie was apparently taken in by the nuns. Any information would be a fantastic help. Thanks

Hi,
I live at Ballymagroarty in county Derry, Ireland, and I enclose a piece of verse which I wrote about the area.

Ballymagroarty

Like children playing hide and seek
Birds respond to each other
With chirps in the June air.
A breeze, disturbs opening leaves
Of spindly trees and the flora
Of sub-urban hillsides.
A neighbour's dog responds
To the sound of passing bikes,
The latter unknown
In the days of Marianus.

What history is locked in these hills?
Of a people, poor and simple,
Hunters of the deer
And tillers of the soil,
Witnesses to a ritual of sun-worship
At nearby Aileach.
A place graced by the presence
Of Colm Cille
Prior to his departure for Iona.
Today, a people as Irish as the heather
On distant mountains
Or the near- by Walls of Derry.
Now witnesses to the all-weather pitch,
The supermarket, and the indoor
Swimming pool…

Upon these thoughts I reflect as I look
At the clear sky over "Ballymac"
In the deanery of Templemore.

Hi
I'm gathering data for a history of the 10th Ohio Infantry. Steven McGroarty was a Captain in that Regiment. I have some data, but would be interested in any more data that you might have. I believe that he is buried at Spring Grove. I thought I saw a monument there, but would have to check the records for sure. Drop me an e mail to discuss McGroarty in more detail. Thanks

Dear sir,
I believe I am a descendant of the "Cornelius McGroarty, family of Chester, descendants of James", but I don' t know for sure. My Father's Father was Harry (Henry) J. McGroerty, note the "e". My mother said that his father changed the spelling of his name from a to e; My father's grandfather was Corneilus who bore I believe, 9 or 10 McGroarty children. I was just wondering if you had heard any story that would confirm this possible connection? Just curious.

I believe my 4th great grandmother/father were Susan Williamson McGorarty and Niel McGroarty. I believe they had a daughter Mary McGroarty who married Thomas BLAIN of Drumbarrity, Killybegs. One of their offspring, Ellen, emigrated to NYC in the early 1860s. By way of verification, do you have any knowledge of Susan (aka Susannah) Williamson's family? We understand her brother Richard Williamson came to the US as a sea captain and was a privateer, and had a hand in establishing the Church of St. Stanislaus in Baltimore. I look forward to being in Donegal in a few weeks to do more research.

Rev. John McGroarty was the P.P. of St Columbas Church in the town of Carrick in the Parish of Glencolumbkille in County Donegal from 1870 to 1878 when he died. He fought for tenant rights in the Parish. He was from Keelogs in Inver and two nieces, Ellen and Maggie McGroarty also lived in Glencolumbkille at the time. Maggie married Patrick McIntyre from Malinbeg, Glencolumbkille. Would anyone happen to know how John McGroarty is related to the other McGroarty families of Inver?

Hi, I've enjoyed browsing your site. It turns out that my mother's maiden name was Mary Kathleen McGroarty; she was born in Toronto in 1927 to Thomas G. and Agnes T. McGroarty. Mr. McGroarty (1890-1968), born in Woodbridge, Ontario, now a northern suburb of Toronto, was a decorated veteran of the Canadian Army in World War 1, and the seventh child of Bernard McGroarty (b. 1860) and his wife Susan, whom you list on p. 235 as Susan Furrie. Family records and official Canadian documents show her actual maiden name was Fleury. She was the daughter of an exiled French military officer who we believe settled in Ireland sometime after the fall of Louis Philippe in 1848. She married Bernard as a young woman and moved with him to Canada early in the 1880s. Hope this additional information is of some use and interest to you.

if you went to donegal to find mcgroartys you didnt have to look far! they are a big name still in donegal, my grandad is from there and now lives in newry. his brother and nephew owned many local businesses round the area. me and my dad (who is also called martin mcgroarty) visit regularly and are still in contact with most of the immediate family. infact, my great uncle has a detailed history fo the name, and where all the family ended up emmigrating to. worth checking out.

The great gushing lifestyles of the McG Clan seems to be drying up this past while. Mc G's without inspiration or imagination is difficult to comprehend given the Clan's literary history. So how about it folks ? Did anybody go to the Flight of the Earls and if so, was there any reference there to the McG clan circa 17th century ?

Message: hi John.great site.been doing a bit more digging into family 14 and found a few more mcgroarty's for insertion if you want to add them. one of note is william mcg from killygordon who i found on the landowner register for 1876 (probably the same one for the griffiths valuation 20 years earlier in the same parish), others of note are the rev.john mcg possibly a brother or cousin of william and a mary mcg as well as an ellen mcg.as yet i don't exactly know what their connection is to me other than it is more than likely that they are my ancestors.also on reflection of the inclusion of edward from lifford 1825 there is still a bit of a debate on him being an ancestor, but i'll keep you posted.once again, fabulous work and if i can be of any help don't hesitate to include me. i'll be in donegal again during the schools october week doing a bit more digging.all the best for now.tom
