Hello, My grandfather, Neil McGroarty came to America from Bonny Glen, Mountcharles, Donegal in 1909. He married Cassie Molloy from Dunkineely, Donegal. I am trying to find out more infomation about his family- brothers and sisters. I know there are relatives in St. Paul, Minnesota. I would appreciate any information or help in how to gain this information. Thanks.

My Grandfather was Andrew Mc Garorty...also known as Andrew Slavin. He was from ballystrang, in Donegal. He had two brothers, one named Bernard, who emigrated to USA late 1800's. He, being the youngest, never did see them throughout his life. He died in 1966.I would be delighted to make any connection whatsoever, with anyone who feels they might be able to cast some light on a connection.

This is an excellent site. My granny was Roseann McGroarty, born in Inver, Donegal,I believe. She was my maternal granny and all I know is that some of her relatives had a pub in donegal town. She married Paddy Edwards and they lived in Ballinakillew near Laghey and Ballingtra. Roseann died in 1966 and Paddy died in 1987. Thanks for all the fascinating and rigorously researched material

Does anyone know about a Margaret Margarita Wilson (also known as Mary or Maria)? She was originally from The Frosses area of Donegal. Her Date of birth is thought to be 26/04/1921, she was baptised on 30/04/1921. She is the daughter of Richard Wilson and Margaret Wilson (nee McGroarty). It is thought this lady had 9 brothers including two called Daniel DOB 17/03/1931 and Edward DOB 27/11/1928. Any help would be gratefully received.

I am setting up a group in Inver Parish where I understand you have family connections in the past. This project seeks to enable communities in Ireland to reconnect with those who have left the area - and their descendants' worldwide - bringing social, cultural and economic benefits.

What if, as a nation, we mobilised each parish in Ireland to actively research its genealogical past and identify those people who are of its own flesh and blood, reach out and engage their interest?

The idea is very simple: instead of waiting for people of Irish descent to return to Ireland to "trace their roots" it proposes to enable local communities, through largely volunteer effort, to proactively engage with their Diaspora. This reverse genealogy entails the tracing and recording of all the people who left and seeking out their living descendents worldwide. Those identified or recognised as persons of Irish heritage or affiliation are invited to become part of a new extended Irish society.

The effort would culminate in a week of welcome where we would ask people back to the Parish .The Project aim is to connect people of Irish heritage aboard with the Irish parish communities from where their ancestors emigrated in Ireland.

It is sponsored and supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Heritage Council and County Council, the GAA and a number of Irish-American founders.

More details are available on Project web site at

My g-gf was John McGortey, born 1860 in Polmont, Scotland, and died in 1918 in Cambria County, PA. His parents were Patrick and Margaret (Goulden), both born in Ireland. John spelled his last name "McGortey," but it appears on Scotland census records, mostly as "McGourtey." Patrick's death record lists the name as "McGrorty." John had several siblings, including Patrick (who spelled his name as McGrorty), Ann (Lafferty), and Thomas.

This email is really in reply to the message posted by Kathleen Groom in Dec'10. Her mother Josie and my grandmother Annie Travers were sisters. Their mother was Margaret McGroarty married to Patrick Sweeney. (Selacis Donegal) It was great to get another snippet of information about that part of the family. Anyone have any more info they could share with me? If you pick this up Kathleen it would be good to hear from you.

My father's maternal grandparents were William Ross and Catherine (Kate) McGroarty Ross. William Ross was from Coleraine and Kate was from Donnegal (not sure of the village). Kate's parents were Charles McGroarty and Grace Ward McGroarty. According to family records, Charles McGroarty died in 1894 and Grace Ward McGroarty died in 1898. Kate was 12 years-old when she was orphaned. The eldest son inherited the family home and farm and kicked out his siblings. Kate went to Glasgow for a few years but eventually returned to Ireland, where she met and married William Ross. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1912.

My Dad, Kenneth Daniel McGroarty was born in Barrow-in-Furness, England to George McGroarty, an Irish immigrant. My Dad had two brothers, George McGroarty, and John McGroarty (both deceased...John emigrated to Canada in the 1960's), and two sisters, Cicely (still alive in England) and Marjorie (passed away two years ago). My dad Kenneth emmigrated to the USA in the 1960's and I am the first US born in our line. My twins, David and Daniel were born in England, and my youngest, Hannah is the second US birth in our family line. We are very close to the Canadian McGroartys and are filled with McGroarty pride. If you are a McGroarty and would like to chat please let us know! We do have geneology records for our line going back to Tory Isle (keeps of the Psalm). Thanks for creating this website to connect all our family tree branches and roots!!

I regret to say we lost a true American Hero on 6/7/10. Fire Chief Mike McGroarty passed away from his fight with CA. He was the Godfather of Urban Search & Rescue and Incident Command System in the Fire/Disaster service and will be missed by all who knew him and those who did not know him. A large hole has just been left in the Emergency Fire/US&R world.

Just wanted to chime in. We are from Northwestern Indiana. I have a brother and two sisters, and a McGroarty cousin in Michigan. My grandfather Dennis McGroarty emigrated in the late 19th century--My dad Edward was born in 1912 in Chicago. There was another McGroarty family in northwest Indiana (Highland?), but for some reason we were aware of each other but did not get together. I don't have a lot of information about my family, but would love to find out more about others. My Dad's name was Edward James and my brother's name is James Edward. Don't know if this helps or not, bur ir sure is interesting!

I live at Ballymagroarty in county Derry, Ireland, and I enclose a piece of verse which I wrote about the area.

Like children playing hide and seek
Birds respond to each other
With chirps in the June air.
A breeze, disturbs opening leaves
Of spindly trees and the flora
Of sub-urban hillsides.
A neighbour's dog responds
To the sound of passing bikes,
The latter unknown
In the days of Marianus.

What history is locked in these hills?
Of a people, poor and simple,
Hunters of the deer
And tillers of the soil,
Witnesses to a ritual of sun-worship
At nearby Aileach.
A place graced by the presence
Of Colm Cille
Prior to his departure for Iona.
Today, a people as Irish as the heather
On distant mountains
Or the near- by Walls of Derry.
Now witnesses to the all-weather pitch,
The supermarket, and the indoor
Swimming pool…

Upon these thoughts I reflect as I look
At the clear sky over "Ballymac"
In the deanery of Templemore.

Dear sir,
I believe I am a descendant of the "Cornelius McGroarty, family of Chester, descendants of James", but I don' t know for sure. My Father's Father was Harry (Henry) J. McGroerty, note the "e". My mother said that his father changed the spelling of his name from a to e; My father's grandfather was Corneilus who bore I believe, 9 or 10 McGroarty children. I was just wondering if you had heard any story that would confirm this possible connection? Just curious.

Hi everyone! I'm researching my Dunlevy family from the Sallows/Mountcharles area. I've got as far back as Anthony born to Ann or Hon. Magruerty in 1830. Possibly prior to her marriage. If anyone has any information going back that far I'd love to know.

On you page:Tabulated Dec, 26 1945.Wilkes-Barre McGroartys. Descendants of Charles McGroarty. Charles McGroarty, born in 1778 was one of the six sons. None of his children came to America, but some of his grandchildren are living in and about Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. There are about 23 families of McGroartys living in Wilkes-Barre, the suburbs and immediate vicinity. Familiar names are; ...Catherine L. McGroarty, Hotel Sterling, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; Mrs. E.A. Stapleton, - Katherine L. sister lives at 204 State St, Albany, New York.
I am the granddaugher of Mrs. Edward A. Stapleton of State Street in Albany, NY (Sarah Gertrude McGroarty Stapleton). Sarah McGroarty Stapleton also had a sister named Rose. I believe she never married. Any further information on this Wilkes Barre/Plains/Edwardsville PA McGroary Family would be appreciated.

I believe my 4th great grandmother/father were Susan Williamson McGorarty and Niel McGroarty. I believe they had a daughter Mary McGroarty who married Thomas BLAIN of Drumbarrity, Killybegs. One of their offspring, Ellen, emigrated to NYC in the early 1860s. By way of verification, do you have any knowledge of Susan (aka Susannah) Williamson's family? We understand her brother Richard Williamson came to the US as a sea captain and was a privateer, and had a hand in establishing the Church of St. Stanislaus in Baltimore. I look forward to being in Donegal in a few weeks to do more research.

Just talking with friends and doing some late night googling when I came upon your website. I am related to the McGrorty's from Ontario, Canada (77.1, and such). You only have my uncle Greg (c1965) on your research as descendants. He is the youngest of 5. Oldest to youngest (not sure of DOBs) is Ross, Marilyn, Paul, Mary Ann, then Greg.

His father Peter Francis born in Janesville, Pa.married Mary Gemmel, his father James, born 1835(I think)married Ellen Brennan. Buried in Hazelton, Pa. How do we fit into the puzzle? My brother Ed in DC has four married sons and numerous grandsons. The name lives on strongly in the USA.

Hi Stumbled across your site. My mother's family are from Donegal. Her maternal grandmother was Margaret McGroarty who married a Patrick Sweeney. As far as I know they were from the Frosses/Inver area. They went on to have a large family of approx 8 children . Names I know are Anne Marie Sweeney (my grandmother)Rita, John Francis, Patrick, Josephine, Tony, Danny. I'm trying to research the McGroarty and Sweeney parts of my family. If you feel you have any connection or have any information which you think might be useful I would love to hear from you. Annemarie Devereux-Cooke

Rev. John McGroarty was the P.P. of St Columbas Church in the town of Carrick in the Parish of Glencolumbkille in County Donegal from 1870 to 1878 when he died. He fought for tenant rights in the Parish. He was from Keelogs in Inver and two nieces, Ellen and Maggie McGroarty also lived in Glencolumbkille at the time. Maggie married Patrick McIntyre from Malinbeg, Glencolumbkille. Would anyone happen to know how John McGroarty is related to the other McGroarty families of Inver?

Hi, I've enjoyed browsing your site. It turns out that my mother's maiden name was Mary Kathleen McGroarty; she was born in Toronto in 1927 to Thomas G. and Agnes T. McGroarty. Mr. McGroarty (1890-1968), born in Woodbridge, Ontario, now a northern suburb of Toronto, was a decorated veteran of the Canadian Army in World War 1, and the seventh child of Bernard McGroarty (b. 1860) and his wife Susan, whom you list on p. 235 as Susan Furrie. Family records and official Canadian documents show her actual maiden name was Fleury. She was the daughter of an exiled French military officer who we believe settled in Ireland sometime after the fall of Louis Philippe in 1848. She married Bernard as a young woman and moved with him to Canada early in the 1880s. Hope this additional information is of some use and interest to you.

The great gushing lifestyles of the McG Clan seems to be drying up this past while. Mc G's without inspiration or imagination is difficult to comprehend given the Clan's literary history. So how about it folks ? Did anybody go to the Flight of the Earls and if so, was there any reference there to the McG clan circa 17th century ?

They emigrated to Clarion County, Pennsylvania in 1887 and 1888. There may also have been another son, Charles. Would love to hear from PA McGrorty/McGroartys.
