A History of the McGroarty Family in USA as per
Dr John J McGroarty, Easton, Minn (c.1881 - ?)

[ This and the following pages are a history of the family in USA up to about 1947.  It was compiled by Dr John J McGroarty of Easton Minnesota and sent to me by Jonathan Glassow, to whom I am indebted. The original material was typewritten with various hand amendments and was difficult to OCR for a variety of reasons. I hope that what appears below is not unduly inaccurate, and apologise for any errors in transcription. I have taken the liberty of correcting most of the obvious errors in spelling but have tried to refrain from otherwise interfering with the original text. ]

The McGroarty family name is now found in nearly every section of the USA, and in all the large cities, particularly New York and Philadelphia. Probably the greatest number live in and around Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Co. Penn. The most widely known in recent years probably John Stephen McGroarty, Congressman, Playwright, Author and Poet, who was born in the vicinity of Wilkes-Barre, Pa, and in his twenties moved to Los Angeles, Calif. He died in 1944.

The name is prominent in the history of the Civil War in several states. Captain William H McGroarty was killed in the battle of Lookout Creek in 1863 while pursuing rebels. Colonel Stephen J McGroarty it is recorded captured 17 rebels single-handed. Both were of the 61st Regiment Volunteer Infantry, Ohio. Similar records can be found of the McGroartys (McGrortys) in Minnesota where descendants of Bryan McGroarty still reside. Eugenie McGrorty beloved, retired teacher of the St. Paul School District and descendant of a distinguished McGroarty family resides in St Paul.

Beginning with Neil and Dennis McGroarty who came to America prior to the Revolutionary War the McGroarty name can be traced through all the wars in which our country has been engaged.

As far as can be determined the McGroartys seem to be a healthy progressive group who have participated in all phases of American life, with a goodly share of doctors, lawyers, teachers, clergymen, tradesman, and farmers, among them. And they still seem to be coming over from Donegal, as a clipping from the New York News dated 27 November 1946 stated: First to sign for the 21st Golden Gloves is Navy Veteran  John McGroarty, 19 years, 205 pounds, heavyweight, a stalwart son of Killygordon, Donegal, Ireland.

All who bear the name McGroarty may well be proud of the history of their people in America.
